Program Training Plan

The Medical Office Administration Program consists of two parts:

Part 1, MEDICAL OFFICE CLASS and LAB TRAINING (540 hours)
This program will train students to obtain employment as a receptionist, administrative assistant, unit clerk, ward clerk, or health information specialist.  Employment is available in physicians offices, hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, public school health services, research institutes, foundations, public health departments, correctional facilities, or in medical departments of large companies. Students will learn administrative and clerical procedures including: reception, appointment scheduling, telephone triage, organizing medical records and filing, medico legal and ethical responsibilities, basic billing and medical coding, insurance claims and reimbursement policies, collection processes for patient accounts, computer billings, banking, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, employment skills, as well as medical terminology to be able to read and understand what is needed in communicating with patients and physicians. Students will also receive CPR and First Aid training and certifications.


Externship Training

Part 2, Medical Office Externship Training (90 hours)
For this part of the program, the student goes on-site to a medical office where they observe and assist in the doctor’s office administration of daily tasks. Students will be responsible to arrange their own externship site in coordination with the program instructor.

Extra Supply Cost Students will be required to purchase scrubs, MOA training kit, blood pressure kit, and text/workbooks
Avg. Starting Wage $29,430 Yearly ($14.15 /hr.)
Certifications MATC Certificate of Proficiency (COP) in Medical Office Administration; Industry Certifications: • CPR/First Aid Certification • Preparation for National Coding Certification through the AAPC

Program Length

630 Hour Program • 9 - 12 Months (2 semester + Externship)

Course Prerequisites

• All students must meet with the MATC Counselor prior to enrollment to complete a training agreement form.

• As part of the admission process, students may be required to complete a basic assessment of reading and math skills.  The test is free and takes approximately 2 hr. to complete. For additional information, call the Testing Center at: (801) 753-4110.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE AND AVAILABILITY:
Open Entry / Open Exit Enrollment (OE/OE): Students can start class on the 1st or 3rd Monday of the month, providing space is available, and will end upon completion of competencies. High school students must approve enrollment start and end dates with their high school counselor before registering with MATC.

Note: If high school students or their high school class graduates and have not finished all program hours prior to their graduation date, tuition will be charged for the remaining hours.


THE MEDICAL OFFICE PROFESSION:
Medical Office Administrators perform secretarial duties using specific knowledge of medical terminology and hospital, clinic, or laboratory procedures. Duties may include scheduling appointments, billing patients, and compiling and recording medical charts, reports, and correspondence.
