Program Training Plan

The need for qualified medical coders has greatly increased due to demand for health care services and the tightening of government guidelines related to health care coverage, patient services and reimbursement processes. This accelerated program is for the individual with prior medical office, billing experience, or currently working in the field using diagnostic and procedure codes. This program will train students to properly locate, document, and validate appropriate Diagnostic and Procedure codes using the current ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding manuals for professional services. Students will gain a stronger knowledge in anatomy and medical terminology. The student will be trained in proper billing, insurance claims, and reimbursement policies. The program will enable students to gain the knowledge and experience to be a qualified medical coder in the health care industry. Students will also receive CPR/First Aid certification through the AHA. This course prepares the student to take the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) examination with the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). Upon passing the examination the student will be nationally certified as a medical coder with the AAPC.

*Prior to the admission process the individual must meet with the course instructor with their letter and documentation to determine eligibility.

Students will also be required to purchase scrubs, training materials, and work/textbooks. It is also recommended that students purchase 3 other recommended textbooks for study.

Course Prerequisites

• Students must have a high school diploma, or GED.
• The program requires at least one-year prior medical experience and a letter of recommendation from a physician or medical office manager. This recommendation must include the number of years of experience the individual has in a medical field. The individual must have knowledge in medical front office duties.
• Prior to admission students must schedule an appointment with the Counseling Office at: 801-753-4109, to determine eligibility for the program.
• As part of the admission process, adult students are required to complete a basic assessment of reading and math skills. The test is free and takes approximately 1 hr to complete. For additional information, call the Testing Center at: (801) 753-4110.

**AAPC National Coding Certification Exam is not provided by MATC. Exam cost is $300.00, and a membership fee is also required at a cost of $70.00. MATC tuition and fees do not cover these extra costs.
