THE MEDICAL ASSISTANT PROFESSION:
Medical assistants complete administrative and clinical tasks in the offices of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, and other health practitioners. Their duties vary with the location, specialty, and size of the practice. Medical assistants take and record patients’ personal information. They must be able to keep that information confidential and discuss it only with other medical personnel who are involved in treating the patient. Medical assistants also collect and prepare laboratory specimens and sometimes perform basic laboratory tests, like: injections, biohazard handling, drawing blood and IV placement, preparing patients for x-rays, take electrocardiograms, remove sutures, and change dressings.
