Apprenticeship

-

General Information:
Apprenticeship programs are composed of two parts:

  • On-the-job training–provided by a sponsor (employer) where the apprentice is trained to apply what is learned in class.
  • Classroom instruction–designed to provide job-related theory and technical knowledge.
On-the-job Training: MATC does not provide on-the-job training. Students must locate their own sponsors.  The Apprenticeship Department is not given job listings so we recommend the following avenues for seeking employment opportunities:
- Department of Workforce Services (DWS).  Look on-line for locations
- On-line yellow pages and other searches
- Calling MATC’s Placement Specialist (801.863.7654)
Classroom Instruction: MATC provides classroom and lab-related instruction for apprenticeship programs. Apprenticeship classes are held two nights a week, generally around 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.

They are available in Fall and Spring terms.  “A” classes are usually* held in Fall term (September through December) and “B” classes are held in Spring term (January through April).  “A” and “B” classes are successive and not interchangeable.

* Offset classes are held for Electrical students if there is interest and enough enrollment.  These classes include the “A” and “B” class instruction and go from January through June.

Length of Program: Completion of an apprenticeship program will take up to four years.
Certificates and Licensure: Upon completion of the MATC Related Instruction course, the apprentice will receive an MATC Recognition of Training.

Upon completion of the MATC Related Instruction course and the completion of the required 8000 on-the-job training, the student is qualified to take the State Journeyman Exam.

Student’s Commitment: The student must be committed to attend all class sessions, complete all homework assignments, complete all quizzes, and pass a comprehensive final examination for each class.
Attendance Policy: An apprentice must attend 72 hours of the possible 81 hours each semester. This 90% attendance standard has been established by the Office of Apprenticeship, Industry Employers, and Labor Services. Any absences beyond this point will result in an incomplete (I) grade. The student will then be required to take the course again at his / her own expense.

A maximum of two (2) work-related absences (nine hours) per semester will be excused. The only excused absences are work-related absences. The student must submit a letter on company letterhead signed by his / her immediate supervisor. The letter must be presented to the instructor before the end of the week that class was missed.

Exams: A final examination will be given at the end of the course. This will cover all the material taught in the course and may include material covered in previous courses. All tests, quizzes, assignments and lab projects must be turned in to the Instructor before taking the final exam.

A competency test will be given at the end of each semester. This test will be separate from the final exam and grade, but completion of this test with a passing score will be required to move on to the next semester. The competency test may be taken twice, only.  If the student also fails the re-take he / she will be required to repeat the appropriate semester.

Grading Policy:
Credit (CR): A credit  grade is equivalent to a minimum of a “B” grade. To receive a credit grade for an apprenticeship course, students must:

  • Maintain 90% attendance.
  • Attend 72 hours of each 81 hour course.
  • Complete all coursework within the designated time.
  • Score 75% on all written assignments, quizzes, and tests.
  • Complete all lab projects to instructor and blueprint specifications.
Incomplete (I): Failure to meet any of the criteria listed above. Apprentices that receive an incomplete grade must retake the course at their own expense.
