Friday morning state and city officials gathered together in front of community members at Thanksgiving Point to view the changing of ownership on land west of Thanksgiving Point. Mountainland Applied Technology College (MATC) purchased 22 acres within the Thanksgiving Point development for a North Utah County Campus. Robert O. Brems, President of MATC handed a check for $4.49 million for the property to President and CEO of Thanksgiving Point, Mike Washburn. President Washburn welcomed the MATC to the neighborhood and stated, "the land being purchased by MATC is an excellent piece of property for a college. He also stated, "Thanksgiving Point is thrilled to have the MATC as part of the development.
Lehi City Mayor, Howard Johnson was also at the event to welcome the college. He stated "the city of Lehi could not be more pleased to have the MATC as part of the city. " MATC does so much good in the lives of our students."
Funding for the property was approved at the 2006 Legislature. "The Legislature was very supportive of Utah County this year," stated President Brems, "Not only did MATC get the nod for funding to purchase property, but Utah Valley State College also was funded for construction of their new Digital Learning Center library." President Brems cites great efforts by many legislators to see this happen and particularly praises the efforts of Senate President John Valentine for his support.
Founded in 1991 to teach vocational skills, today MATC is established to offer associate degree training. It is one of the largest of the UCAT campuses and responds to the needs of approximately 10,000 individuals annually. The MATC provides a comprehensive curriculum of technical training, adult basic education and continuing education, as well as customized employee training. Within the 3 counties; MATC serves the 19 high schools in Alpine, Nebo, Provo, Wasatch, Park City, North Summit and South Summit School Districts.
