Apprenticeship

General Information:
Apprenticeship programs are composed of two parts:
  • On-the-job training provided by a sponsor who exposes the apprentice to practical applications in all phases of a particular craft
  • Classroom-related instruction designed to provide the apprentice with knowledge of theoretical and technical aspects of their craft
Total completion of an apprenticeship program will take up to four years, depending upon the craft. MATC provides classroom-related and supplemental instruction for apprenticeship programs.

MATC neither provides on-the-job training nor acts as a sponsor for apprentices. Individuals must locate their own sponsors. For individual industry-sponsored programs, a student should contact their employer’s training director or the MATC Apprenticeship Office.

Click HERE for Math Assessment Test Review Aids.

The assessment test requirement will be waived if you have:
  • passed an Algebra II class with "C" grade or better within the last two years
  • completed the ACT test with a score of 19 or better in mathematics within the last two years
If you do not pass the Math Assessment Test you will be required to enroll in an Apprenticeship Math Class. You may take this class concurrently with your Apprenticeship 1A class or you may take the Math class during Fall term and take an Offset Apprenticeship 1A 1B class during the Spring term.
Employment: You must be working in the industry! or become employed within the first two weeks of the semester.
Commitment: You must be committed to attend all class sessions, complete all homework assignments, complete all quizzes, and pass a comprehensive final examination for each class. Please make sure you are attending the class section that you are registered for.
Attendance: An apprentice must attend 72 hours of the possible 81 hours each semester. This 90% attendance standard has been established by the Office of Apprenticeship, Industry Employers, and Labor Services. Any absences beyond this point will result in your being issued an incomplete (I) grade. You will then be required to take the course again at your own expense.

A maximum of three (3) work-related absences (nine hours) per semester will be excused. Your only excused absences are work-related absences. To be excused for work-related absences, you must submit a letter on company letterhead signed by your immediate supervisor. The letter must be presented to the instructor before the end of the week that class was missed.
Grading Policy: There are two possible grades for MATC apprenticeship courses:
1. Credit (CR): A credit (CR) grade is equivalent to a minimum of a “B” grade. To receive a credit grade for an apprenticeship course, students must:
  • Maintain 90% attendance.
  • Attend 81 hours of each 90 hour course.
  • Complete all coursework within the designated time.
  • Score 80% on all written assignments, quizzes, and tests.
  • Complete all lab projects to instructor and blueprint specifications.
2. Incomplete (I): Failure to meet any of the criteria listed above. Apprentices that receive an incomplete grade must retake the course at their own expense.
Final Exam: You will receive a comprehensive final examination at the end of the course. This will cover all the material covered in the course and may include material covered in previous courses. You must score a minimum of 75% on all tests, quizzes, assignments, lab projects, etc. and the final exam to receive credit and to pass the course. Before sitting for the final exam you must complete all class assignments and quizzes and turn them in to the instructor.
Competency: You will receive a competency test at the end of each semester. This test will be separate from your final test and grade, but completion of this test with a passing score will be required to move on to the next semester. If you do not pass the competency test, you will be given one other opportunity to retest.

The competency test will be administered by the Testing Center towards the end of the semester. If you do not take the test or fail it twice you will be required to repeat the appropriate semester.
High School Student Information: High School Student Programs: High school students who are 16 years and older and who are enrolled in Utah Public High Schools in the Alpine, Nebo, North Summit, Park City, Provo, South Summit, and Wasatch School Districts may enroll in MATC programs tuition-free.

High School Student Program Enrollment: Prior to being enrolled into an apprenticeship course or program at MATC, students receive counseling at their local high school to ensure that the student is in the appropriate course or program, has the aptitude to succeed and understands program requirements.

After passing the Math Assessment test the high school counselor will provide MATC Student Services with the completed registration form for the desired apprenticeship course. Pre-registered students will receive a confirmation letter along with a statement of requirements for the course or program.

High School Students and Apprenticeship: All high school students are required to be a registered apprentice with the Office of Apprenticeship. For more information contact:
